Troubleshooting GHS installations using USB dongles
If you will be using a USB dongle to protect your copy of GHS, it is very
important that you do NOT insert your USB dongle before doing the following
procedure:
(1) Put your GHS installer CD with USB dongle support into your CD-ROM drive.
(2) Click through the GHS installation procedure until it finishes.
(3) Insert your USB dongle into a USB port on your Windows 98/ME/2K/XP system;
Windows will flash a few hardware detection messages, and the USB dongle
drivers will be automatically installed. GHS is now ready for use.
This warning only applies to the first time you are installing USB dongle
support on your computer. From then on - including any future GHS update
installations - you may freely insert or remove your USB dongle. This warning
also does not apply to the GHS parallel port dongle (which by contrast needs
to be in place during the initial GHS installation procedure).
If you inadvertently inserted your USB dongle before installing GHS, then
its device drivers will not be properly installed and various problems will
arise. If this occurs, it is possible to repair your system by carefully
following these steps:
(1) Make sure your USB dongle is now inserted.
(2) Go into Device Manager from the System Control Panel, then locate
the "Dongles" (under Win98/ME) or "USB Dongles" (under Win2K/XP) category.
Right-click on the "USB Dongle..." item within that category, and choose
Uninstall.
(3) Remove your USB dongle.
(4) Delete the following files (assuming Windows directory C:\WINDOWS):
(a) Under Windows 98 or ME, delete C:\WINDOWS\INF\DRVDATA.BIN and
C:\WINDOWS\INF\DRVIDX.BIN.
(b) Under Windows 2K or XP, delete C:\WINDOWS\INF\USBKEY2K.PNF if present.
Also, look through all the C:\WINDOWS\INF\OEM*.INF files to see if any has
"Class=USBDongle" on the third line. If so, delete that .INF file and its
corresponding .PNF file (for example, both OEM27.INF and OEM27.PNF).
(5) Put your GHS installer CD with USB dongle support into your CD-ROM drive.
(6) Click through the GHS installation procedure until it finishes.
(7) Insert your USB dongle into a USB port on your Windows 98/ME/2K/XP system;
Windows will flash a few hardware detection messages, and the USB dongle
drivers will be automatically installed. (However, on some systems you
may still see a "New Hardware Wizard" on a one-time-only basis. If so,
choose automatic installation in the wizard, and all should be well.)
