LIMIT RISE (review)
The RISE limit deals with the value of the absolute righting arm at
its maximum relative to its value at equilibrium. A heeling moment is
required (otherwise division by zero would occur).
The "rise" is the increase in the absolute righting arm from the angle of equilibrium (or "first intercept") to the angle where it reaches maximum. The limit is expressed as the ratio between the rise and the value at equilibrium. Here is a picture to illustrate LIMIT RISE. |
Note that when the RISE ratio has a minimum value of 1, the maximum righting arm must be more than twice the value at equilibrium to pass. If that sounds familiar, perhaps you have experience evaluating stability for anchor handling or towing operations.
LIMIT RISE will accept two angles, usually MAX and an arbitrary angle such as 30 degrees. In that case the rise is taken at the lesser of the two angles. |
