SPONSON (PM statement)
|
Part Maker has many secrets that can unlock the mystery of creation... geometry file creation that is. Today's topic is not technically a secret - it's right there in Help PM - but we'll wager it will be new to some of our readers. SPONSON is one of a few different statements that create shapes with a particular cross-section. SPONSON is unique because the resulting shape is based on an existing hull shape and a series of width@length values.
Perhaps it will be better explained with pictures. Here is a cross-section of the old classic Fishing Vessel. |
Now, suppose, we've run a stability analysis and determined that the boat doesn't have the righting area needed for safe operations. One possible remedy is to make the hull wider with the addition of, you guessed it, sponsons.
All it takes is a few lines in a run file to breathe new life into an old ship. |
READ FV.GF ENTER PM CREATE HULL\SPONSON.C SPONSON = .1@21.175F, 2@15.4F, 2@26.95A, .1@32.725A SPACING 3 / WRITE FV-SPON.GF QUIT `PM |
Run the above command sequence and, viola, the sponson is added as pictured below. |
Obviously, for the final design there will be some adjustments, but being able to quickly evaluate the stability impact of SPONSONS of different widths can save a lot of time. |
