RIGHTING ARM RATIO (RAR) LIMIT

The LIMIT keyword RAR is one of about 15 different limit types. RAR stands for righting arm ratio. It is the ratio of the absolute righting arm to the heeling arm at the same heel angle. What's more, this limit can calculate the largest ratio for all the angles in a range. Like most GHS limits, one starting angle and up to two terminating angles are allowed.

After looking at the image below, you might notice a resemblance to the RISE limit which was unearthed in COW142. The main difference between the two is that the RAR limit compares the righting and heeling moment arms at the same angle whereas the RISE limit always divides by the arm at equilibrium.

This limit was created for a criterion that applies to Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). Because it is a ratio, the limit works the same regardless of units.

You might have noticed that you are seeing, for the very first time, the first use of the connecting word, "between". Go ahead and marvel at its elegance.

LIMIT RAR BETWEEN EQU AND RA0 OR FLD > 2.0

Here is a quick look at how this limit might be presented in a report.

What more is there to say? When you need it, the righting arm ratio is just what you need.
