Command of the Week
(New or interesting aspects of GHS that you may not know about)

RESERVE RATIO LIMIT
(Requires GHS version 16.70A or later)

The command featured this week was created in June, just a few months ago. We hope it will be a revelation to all but the most diligent students of our Revision History.

The RESERVE RATIO is a LIMIT type which finds the ratio of the positive residual area to the positive absolute area for a range of angles beginning at the first intercept of the absolute righting arm curve.

In the image below, you can see that the Residual Area (RA) is a subsection of the Absolute Area (AA).

Like most limits in GHS, the command specification allows two terminating angles. Because this limit type only considers positive areas, it is not necessary to include the second intercept as a terminating angle. This means that a single limit will address most standards that you might encounter.

LIMIT RESERVE RATIO [FROM EQU0] TO ABS 40 OR FLD > 0.4

The starting angle "FROM EQU0" can't be substituted with any other angle and is therefore optional in the LIMIT command syntax.

For those readers who will be celebrating Thanksgiving this week and might have been anticipating some pertinent joke, we apologize for the lack of turkey flavoring in this COW.
